When torque is applied to a shaft equipped with a magnetostrictive sensor, it induces a change in the magnetic field, which is then detected and translated into a torque value. Optical torque sensors represent another category. They use optical principles to measure torque. Often, a coded disk is attached to the shaft, and as torque is applied, the disk rotates slightly relative to a reference. Optical sensors detect this rotational change and convert it into a torque measurement. These sensors are typically immune to electromagnetic interference.

Rotary torque sensors are designed to be mounted directly onto a rotating shaft, measuring torque dynamically. In contrast, reaction torque sensors are designed to measure torque when the output shaft is stationary, often used to measure the torque produced by a motor or engine.
