Väsymistesteissä, commonly translated as fatigue testing, refers to a crucial aspect of material science and engineering. It involves subjecting materials, components, or structures to repeated cycles of stress or strain to determine their resistance to failure under such conditions. The primary goal of fatigue testing is to understand how a material's properties degrade over time when subjected to cyclic loading, which is a common cause of failure in many real-world applications.

The process typically involves applying a load that fluctuates between a minimum and maximum value. This load can be applied in various ways, such as tension-tension, compression-compression, bending, or torsion. The frequency of these cycles, the magnitude of the stress or strain, and the environmental conditions are all important parameters that are carefully controlled during the test. Data collected from these tests usually includes the number of cycles to failure at a given stress level.

The results are often plotted on a stress-life (S-N) curve, which illustrates the relationship between the applied stress amplitude and the number of cycles a material can endure before fracturing. Fatigue testing is essential for designing components that need to withstand repeated use, such as aircraft parts, vehicle components, bridges, and medical implants. It helps engineers predict the lifespan of a product and establish safe operating limits, thereby preventing catastrophic failures and ensuring safety and reliability. Different types of fatigue tests exist, including constant amplitude, variable amplitude, and random loading tests, depending on the anticipated service conditions.
