Värvainepenetrante, a term derived from Finnish, literally translates to "dye penetrant." It refers to a non-destructive testing method used to detect surface-breaking defects in a material. This technique relies on the principle of capillary action, where a low-viscosity liquid dye is drawn into cracks, pores, or other discontinuities on the surface of a test object.

The process typically involves several steps. First, the surface of the part to be inspected is thoroughly cleaned to remove any contaminants that might hinder the dye's penetration. Next, a liquid penetrant, which may be visible under normal light or fluorescent under UV light, is applied to the surface. After an appropriate dwell time, allowing the penetrant to seep into any defects, the excess surface penetrant is removed. A developer is then applied, which acts as a blotter, drawing the trapped penetrant out of the defects and making them visible as colored indications against the developer background.

Värvainepenetrante is a versatile method applicable to a wide range of materials, including metals, plastics, and ceramics. It is particularly effective at revealing fine cracks, porosity, laps, and seams that might be difficult to detect by other means.
