Värjäystavat refers to dyeing methods. This encompasses a broad range of techniques used to impart color to various materials, most commonly textiles, but also hair, leather, and paper. The fundamental principle behind most dyeing methods involves a dye substance, which is a colored compound, and a material to be dyed. The dye adheres to the material through chemical or physical processes.

Historical dyeing methods often relied on natural dyes derived from plants, insects, and minerals. For instance, indigo from the indigo plant was used for blue hues, madder for reds, and cochineal insects for vibrant reds and purples. These natural dyes required specific mordants, which are substances that help fix the dye to the material, often metallic salts like alum.

Modern dyeing predominantly uses synthetic dyes, which offer a wider spectrum of colors, greater consistency, and often improved fastness (resistance to fading from light, washing, and rubbing). Synthetic dyes can be broadly categorized by their chemical structure and how they bind to fibers, such as reactive dyes, direct dyes, acid dyes, and vat dyes, each suited for different types of fibers like cotton, wool, silk, or synthetics.

The application of dyes can vary significantly. Common methods include immersion dyeing, where the material is soaked in a dye bath. Other techniques include printing, where the dye is applied in a pattern, and dyeing in the mass, where the coloring agent is added to the material before it is formed into a final product, like in the production of colored plastics or yarns. The choice of dyeing method depends on the material, the desired color effect, and the intended use of the dyed item.
