Väpenvapen

Väpenvapen is a neologism used in Swedish-language discourse to describe the concept of weapons designed to target, disable, or negate other weapons, or to defense systems that neutralize threats from weapons. The term combines the word for weapons with an emphatic or relational form that signals an interplay between offense and defense. It is not a formal category in military doctrine, and its use is informal, occurring mainly in analyses of dual-use technologies, countermeasures, and layered defense architectures.

In practice, väpenvapen can be interpreted in several ways. It may refer to electronic warfare measures that disrupt enemy sensors, kinetic countermeasures that intercept missiles, or systems intended to render opponent weapons less effective. It can also encompass cyber operations aimed at degrading weapon-control networks or the hardening of critical infrastructure to withstand weapon effects. In policy and scholarly discussions, the concept is used to illustrate how modern warfare involves reciprocal capabilities—where the presence of weapons prompts the development of countermeasures, and where escalation can be influenced by defense-in-depth and verifiable controls.
