Väljaheiteanalüüs, also known as discriminant analysis, is a statistical technique used to classify objects into distinct groups based on a set of variables. It is particularly useful when the groups are known beforehand, and the goal is to determine which variables are most effective in distinguishing between these groups. The technique is widely used in fields such as biology, medicine, and social sciences.

The process of discriminant analysis involves two main phases: training and classification. During the training phase, the algorithm uses a dataset with known group memberships to develop a model that describes the relationship between the variables and the groups. This model typically includes a linear combination of the variables, known as the discriminant function, which maximizes the separation between the groups.

In the classification phase, the discriminant function is applied to new data to predict the group membership. The object is assigned to the group for which the discriminant function yields the highest value. The accuracy of the classification can be evaluated using various metrics, such as the proportion of correctly classified cases.

Discriminant analysis can be further categorized into linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA). LDA assumes that the variables have a normal distribution and that the covariance matrices of the groups are equal, while QDA relaxes the assumption of equal covariance matrices, allowing for more flexible group boundaries.

One of the key advantages of discriminant analysis is its ability to handle both continuous and categorical variables, making it a versatile tool for a wide range of applications. However, it is important to note that the effectiveness of the analysis depends on the quality and relevance of the data, as well as the appropriateness of the assumptions underlying the chosen model.
