The concept of mediation is crucial in understanding complex causal relationships across various fields, including psychology, sociology, and economics. For instance, if we are studying the effect of socioeconomic status on health outcomes, education level might serve as a mediating factor. Socioeconomic status might influence access to education, which in turn affects health literacy and preventive healthcare choices, ultimately impacting health outcomes.

By targeting the mediator, one can potentially disrupt or alter the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable.
