Välispingutustest, often translated as external exertion tests or stress tests, refers to a broad category of medical examinations designed to assess a patient's physiological response to physical activity. These tests are commonly used in cardiology to evaluate the heart's performance under stress, detect coronary artery disease, and assess the functional capacity of individuals. The principle behind these tests is that exercise places a greater demand on the heart, revealing abnormalities that may not be apparent at rest.

The most prevalent type of välispingutustest is the exercise electrocardiogram (ECG), also known as a stress ECG. During this test, the patient walks on a treadmill or pedals a stationary bicycle while their heart rhythm, blood pressure, and symptoms are continuously monitored. The intensity of the exercise is gradually increased according to a standardized protocol. Physicians look for changes in the ECG, such as ST-segment depression, which can indicate insufficient blood flow to the heart muscle. The choice of test depends on the individual patient's condition, medical history, and the specific diagnostic questions being addressed.
