Välismdefibrillatsioon

Välismdefibrillatsioon refers to the external application of an electrical shock to the chest in order to restore a normal heart rhythm. This procedure is a critical intervention for life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias, most notably ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia. These conditions cause the heart to quiver or beat chaotically, preventing it from effectively pumping blood.

The device used for external defibrillation is called a defibrillator. Modern automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are designed for use by laypeople and provide voice and visual prompts to guide the rescuer. The defibrillator pads are placed on the patient's bare chest, typically in specific locations indicated by diagrams on the pads themselves. One pad is usually placed on the upper right chest below the collarbone, and the other on the lower left side of the chest, below the armpit.

Once the pads are attached and the device has analyzed the heart rhythm, it will advise if a shock is needed. If a shock is indicated, the rescuer ensures no one is touching the patient and then presses the shock button. The electrical current passes through the heart, momentarily stopping all electrical activity and allowing the heart's natural pacemaker to hopefully re-establish a normal rhythm. External defibrillation is often performed as part of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and is most effective when administered rapidly after cardiac arrest. Prompt defibrillation significantly increases the chances of survival for individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.
