Välimuistityypin refers to a category or classification of cache memory within a computer system. Cache memory is a small, fast type of memory that stores frequently accessed data and instructions from the main memory (RAM). This allows the processor to access this information much more quickly, significantly improving the overall performance of the computer. Different types of cache exist, and their classification is based on various factors.

One common way to categorize cache memory is by its proximity to the processor. This leads to the concept of cache levels. Level 1 (L1) cache is the smallest and fastest, typically integrated directly into the processor core. Level 2 (L2) cache is larger and slightly slower than L1, often located on the processor die but not within the core itself. Level 3 (L3) cache is the largest and slowest of the on-chip caches, shared among multiple processor cores. In some architectures, a Level 4 (L4) cache might exist, often implemented as a separate SRAM chip.

Another classification can be based on how the cache is organized and managed, such as direct-mapped, set-associative, or fully associative caches.
