Vähemuse

Vähemuse is the Estonian term for a minority—the part of a population that is smaller in number than the majority and is often distinguished by ethnicity, language, religion or culture. In sociopolitical contexts, vähemus is used to discuss groups that may have distinct cultural practices, languages, or identities within a country or region.

The word vähemuse derives from vähe, meaning “few,” and is used in official and academic language to describe a minority group or the concept of minority status. The genitive form vähemuse is common in phrases such as “vähemuse õigused” (minority rights) or “vähemuste kultuur” (minority culture).

In legal and policy contexts, discussions about vähemused typically address rights and protections designed to ensure equal participation in public life. This can include access to education and media in minority languages, protection against discrimination, and the ability to preserve cultural and linguistic traditions.
