Voronezh

Voronezh is a city and the administrative center of Voronezh Oblast, Russia. It lies on the Voronezh River, south of Moscow, and has about one million residents. The city was founded in 1586 as a frontier fortress to guard southern approaches to the expanding Russian state.

Geography and climate: Voronezh is located in the forest-steppe zone of southwestern Russia. The climate is humid continental, with cold winters and warm summers.

History: The settlement grew as a trade and administrative center in the Tsardom of Russia and later the Russian Empire, developing toward industry and education. In World War II, Voronezh was occupied by German forces from July 1942 to February 1943 and was subsequently liberated by Soviet troops.
