Voolugidae

Voolugidae is a family of extinct marine reptiles that belonged to the clade Sauropterygia, closely related to plesiosaurs. Fossil remains of Voolugidae have been discovered primarily in the Late Triassic period, dating back approximately 220 to 200 million years ago. This family is notable for its transitional characteristics between early sauropterygians and more derived plesiosaurs, offering insights into the evolutionary history of these marine reptiles.

Voolugidae is represented by a single genus, Voolurus, which was first described in 2015 based on fossils found in the Upper Triassic (Norian stage) of the Dolomites, Italy. The type species, Voolurus scheuchzeri, is known from partial skeletal remains, including parts of the skull, vertebrae, and limb bones. The name Voolurus is derived from the Latin word voolurus, meaning "swift," in reference to its presumed agile swimming capabilities.

The anatomy of Voolurus reflects a mix of primitive and advanced traits. It retained some features of earlier sauropterygians, such as a long neck and elongated limbs, but also exhibited characteristics closer to plesiosaurs, such as a more robust skull and specialized teeth adapted for a varied diet. Its skull was relatively broad and equipped with sharp, conical teeth, suggesting a diet that may have included both fish and invertebrates.

Voolugidae is significant in understanding the evolutionary diversification of sauropterygians. Its placement between early forms like Nothosaurus and later plesiosaurs highlights the gradual adaptation of these reptiles to fully marine lifestyles during the Triassic period. The discovery of Voolurus provides valuable data for reconstructing the ecological and environmental conditions of the Late Triassic seas.
