Volumetoaverage is a financial metric that expresses current trading volume relative to a moving average of past volume over a chosen period. It is used to gauge whether activity in a security is higher or lower than typical, helping traders assess liquidity and interest.

Calculation and variants: volumetoaverage is typically calculated as Vt / Vavg(n), where Vt is the current volume and Vavg(n) is the average volume over the last n periods. On daily data, n might be 20 or 50 days; on intraday data, n could be 5 or 10 minutes. Some platforms present the metric as a simple ratio, while others frame it as a factor or a percentage.

Interpretation: values near 1 indicate average activity. Values greater than 1 indicate above-average volume, suggesting heightened interest, potential news impact, or upcoming events. Very high values can imply institutional activity or unusual trading interest, while values well below 1 suggest reduced liquidity or passive trading.

Applications: traders use volumetoaverage to confirm breakouts, assess liquidity risk when entering or exiting positions, and identify unusual interest around earnings or corporate announcements.
