Volumenfrakció

Volumenfrakció, often abbreviated as $v/v$, is a way of expressing the concentration of a solution. It represents the ratio of the volume of a solute to the total volume of the solution. It is typically expressed as a percentage.

To calculate the volume fraction, you divide the volume of the solute by the total volume of the solution. For example, if you have 10 milliliters of alcohol dissolved in 90 milliliters of water, the total volume of the solution is 100 milliliters. The volume fraction of alcohol would be 10 ml / 100 ml, which equals 0.10 or 10% (v/v).

This method of expressing concentration is commonly used when both the solute and the solvent are liquids. It is particularly useful for describing mixtures where the components are miscible, meaning they can dissolve in each other to form a homogeneous solution. Examples include the concentration of alcohol in beverages, or the concentration of certain chemicals in laboratory reagents.

It's important to note that volume fraction is not always additive, especially for solutions of different substances or at high concentrations, due to interactions between molecules. However, for dilute solutions or when dealing with ideal mixtures, it provides a straightforward measure of concentration. The units for volume fraction are typically milliliters per milliliter (ml/ml) or liters per liter (L/L), which cancel out to be dimensionless. When expressed as a percentage, it is denoted as % (v/v).
