Volleyfiring

Volleyfiring is the tactic of delivering a coordinated discharge of firearms by a unit at a single signal rather than relying on individual aimed shots. The purpose is to produce massed fire, increase the chance of hitting a target, and create a psychological effect on the enemy through a visible and audible volley.

Historically, volleyfiring became standard in European line infantry during the early modern period and persisted through the 19th century. Soldiers with smoothbore muskets fired in measured volleys to overwhelm defenders and to compensate for limited accuracy and slow reload times. A volley could be repeated as ranks reloaded in sequence, helping maintain sustained pressure on the opposing force.

The drill for volleyfiring required strict discipline and formal commands. Multiple ranks stood in line, fire was delivered in unison after a command such as prepare to fire or present, and then soldiers reloaded in order to ready the next volley. Timing and cadence were coordinated to maximize fire output while maintaining unit cohesion and safety.

With the advent of rifled weapons, percussion caps, and cartridge ammunition, the practical justification for volleyfiring diminished, as individual aimed fire became more effective at varied ranges. By the late 19th century, it largely disappeared from regular armies, though it survived in ceremonial units, historical reenactments, and some training traditions as a demonstration of traditional infantry tactics.
