Voimamuuntajat, often translated as power transformers, are essential electrical devices used to efficiently transfer electrical energy between circuits through electromagnetic induction. They operate based on Faraday's law of induction, where a changing magnetic flux through a coil induces a voltage. A typical power transformer consists of two or more coils, known as windings, wound around a common ferromagnetic core. The primary winding is connected to an alternating current (AC) source, creating a fluctuating magnetic field in the core. This changing magnetic field then induces a voltage in the secondary winding.

The key function of a power transformer is to change the voltage level of an AC electrical supply. By altering the ratio of the number of turns in the primary and secondary windings, a transformer can either increase (step-up) or decrease (step-down) the voltage.
