Vogons

Vogons are a fictional alien species in Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. They are characterized by a rigid, bureaucratic culture and an emphasis on procedure, forms, and regulations. In appearance, Vogons are often described as greenish and unattractive, with a pompous and officious manner that reflects their role as administrative functionaries in the galaxy.

In the series, the Vogon Empire operates the Vogon Constructor Fleet, a government entity that favors slow, methodical bureaucracy over initiative. Their most infamous act is the demolition of Earth to make way for a hyperspace bypass, an act carried out through their standard, by-the-book process. Their culture prizes paperwork over creativity and tends to be risk-averse.

Vogon poetry is famously terrible; within the fiction, Vogon poetry is described as the third-worst in the universe, and listeners often experience extreme discomfort. Reading Vogon poetry is used as a form of torture in the works. The Vogons’ combination of bureaucratic rigidity and their poetry is a recurring source of satire within the series.

Vogons have appeared across Hitchhiker's media, including radio, television, and film adaptations, and remain a widely recognized symbol of bureaucratic obstruction in popular culture.
