Voettochten

Voettochten are military foot marches, organized movements of troops primarily on foot. They serve to move units across terrain, test endurance and discipline, and develop navigation and marching skills. While common as routine training, voettochten can also be part of operational plans where mobility on foot is required. In civilian contexts the term can refer to long-distance hiking, but in a military sense it denotes organized troop movement.

A typical voettocht involves marching with full equipment over extended distances, with pace and distance adjusted to terrain, weather, and load. Training marches commonly range from 15 to 30 kilometers in a day, while endurance exercises may exceed these figures. Troops may march in formations appropriate to the mission, maintain a steady cadence, and perform route reconnaissance or security tasks along the way. Night marches are used to practice navigation and stealth.

Planning and logistics are central to successful voettochten. Routes are mapped in advance, with attention to elevation, hazards, water sources, and rest stops. Rations, water, medical supplies, and communications are arranged, and contingencies prepared. Gear is chosen to balance protection, mobility, and weight, and foot care—boots, socks, and blister prevention—is emphasized to prevent injuries.

Historically a core element of infantry training and operational mobility, voettochten remain valued for building endurance, teamwork, and navigation skills. Modern forces increasingly integrate mobility alternatives, but disciplined foot marches continue to be used for specialty training, reconnaissance, and ceremonial or endurance exercises.
