Vliehors

Vliehors is a long, barren sandy plain at the western tip of the Dutch island of Vlieland, in the province of Friesland. The landscape consists of wind-swept dunes and flat sand flats, giving the area a desert-like character. The Vliehors forms part of Vlieland’s nature reserve within the Wadden Sea and is valued for its open landscape as well as its coastal and bird habitats.

Historically, the area has been used as a military training ground by the Royal Netherlands Army. For safety reasons, access is restricted during exercises. In the late 20th century and into the present, portions of the Vliehors have been opened for public recreation under controlled conditions. A road across the beach provides access to the western shore in suitable seasons, and a seasonal transport service carries visitors to the end of the Vliehors for day trips.

Ecology and conservation: The Vliehors supports dune vegetation, salt-tolerant flora, and a variety of bird species typical of the Wadden Sea. It is an important stopover site for migratory shorebirds and hosts breeding colonies of several species in suitable years. The management aims to balance the needs of military use, tourism, and conservation, imposing restrictions to protect sensitive habitats and nesting sites.
