Virvendusarütmia

Virvendusarütmia, also known as atrial fibrillation (AFib), is a common type of irregular and often rapid heart rhythm. It originates in the atria, the upper two chambers of the heart. In a normal heartbeat, the atria contract in a regular, coordinated manner to push blood into the ventricles, the lower chambers. In virvendusarütmia, instead of a strong, regular contraction, the atria quiver or "fibrillate" chaotically. This disorganized electrical activity leads to an irregular and rapid heart rate.

The symptoms of virvendusarütmia can vary widely. Some individuals experience no symptoms at all, while others may feel palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, or chest pain. The irregular rhythm can affect the heart's ability to pump blood efficiently, which can lead to a higher risk of stroke, heart failure, and other heart-related complications.

Several factors can contribute to the development of virvendusarütmia. These include advanced age, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, thyroid problems, and excessive alcohol consumption. In some cases, the cause may remain unknown.

Diagnosis typically involves an electrocardiogram (ECG) to record the heart's electrical activity. Treatment aims to restore a normal heart rhythm, control the heart rate, and prevent blood clots. This can involve medications, electrical cardioversion, or, in some cases, catheter ablation procedures. Management also focuses on addressing underlying conditions that may be contributing to the arrhythmia.
