Virtaushakeout, often shortened to "shakeout," is a term used in the context of oil and gas drilling, particularly in the extraction of shale gas and oil. It refers to the process of intentionally creating and managing flow within a newly drilled wellbore to remove drilling fluid, drill cuttings, and other debris that may have accumulated during the drilling process. This is a crucial step before the well is ready for production.

The primary purpose of a virtaushakeout is to clean out the wellbore and establish a stable flow path. This cleaning is essential for maximizing the efficiency of subsequent well stimulation treatments, such as hydraulic fracturing.
