Viljak

Viljak is a small municipality in the northern part of the fictional country of Norlandia. Covering about 68 square kilometers, it is home to roughly 5,200 residents as of 2023. The settlement sits along the Viljak River and lies within a predominantly agricultural region that includes farmland, woodland patches, and several small ponds.

The name Viljak is derived from an old local term for fertile land, reflecting the area’s long association with farming. The village grew around a manor house established in the 17th century and developed into a parish center by the 1680s. Municipal status was attained in the late 19th century and has continued under a locally elected council since then.

Today, Viljak’s economy centers on agriculture, including grain and dairy farming, supplemented by small-scale manufacturing such as wood products and agro-services. The town attracts visitors to nature trails and the historic Viljak Manor, which operates as a cultural site. Transportation relies on regional roads; a railway line is located in the district capital about 20 kilometers away, with regular bus services linking the town to neighboring communities.

Viljak hosts a yearly harvest festival and maintains a public library, a community cultural center, and a parish church. The local government is a nine-member municipal council elected for four-year terms, which selects a mayor to lead the administration. The council oversees urban planning, education, and local services, while regional authorities provide larger-scale services and infrastructure.

Viljak’s population exhibits a balanced age structure with a gradual increase in residents engaged in education and services. The surrounding environment emphasizes sustainable farming, water-quality protection, and the preservation of historic sites.
