Vikakuormitus

Vikakuormitus is a Finnish term that translates to "fault load" or "load shedding" in English. It refers to the controlled reduction of electrical load in a power system to maintain stability and prevent widespread blackouts during periods of insufficient power generation or transmission capacity. This practice is typically implemented as a last resort when the demand for electricity exceeds the available supply, and other measures to balance the grid have been exhausted.

The primary objective of vikakuormitus is to prevent a cascading failure of the power system. When the demand exceeds supply, the frequency of the electricity grid begins to drop. If this frequency falls too low, it can cause generators to trip offline, further exacerbating the problem and leading to a blackout.
