Viivaimet

Viivaimet are measuring and drawing tools used to lay out straight lines, measure distances, and guide drawing and cutting in fields such as technical drawing, architecture, engineering, and carpentry. The term viivaimet is Finnish for straightedges or rulers, referring to instruments that provide a straight edge with measurement marks.

Typical viivaimet are flat bars made from metal, plastic, or wood. They come in various lengths, commonly from about 15 cm to 60 cm or longer. Most have metric markings, and some also include imperial units. Edges may be smooth or chamfered, and some models feature non-slip coatings or textured edges to improve stability when drawing a line. In addition to plain straight rulers, there are combined instruments that integrate scales for different measurement ratios and that can be used in conjunction with other drafting aids.

Common variants include straight rulers for general use, scale rulers (mittakaavaviivaimet) for drawing to specific scales, and sets that incorporate a protractor or a small square for angle and alignment tasks. Viivaimet are often paired with T-squares, set squares, or drafting platforms to maintain perpendicular and parallel relationships in drawings.

Applications of viivaimet span education, engineering, architecture, and hands-on trades. They serve as a basic tool for creating precise lines, transferring measurements, and checking straightness and alignment. Proper care—keeping edges true, avoiding bending, and cleaning to remove dust—is important to maintain accuracy.
