Viirusinfektsioon

Viirusinfektsioon is the Finnish term for viral infection. A viral infection is an illness caused by a virus. Viruses are tiny infectious agents that can only replicate inside the living cells of other organisms. They can infect all types of life forms, from animals and plants to microorganisms, including bacteria and archaea. When a virus enters a host's body, it invades cells and hijacks their machinery to make more copies of itself. This process can damage or destroy host cells, leading to the symptoms of a viral infection.

Symptoms of viral infections vary greatly depending on the specific virus and the part of the body it affects. Common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, muscle aches, and sometimes rashes or gastrointestinal problems. Examples of common viral infections include the common cold, influenza (flu), COVID-19, chickenpox, and measles.

Viral infections are spread in various ways, including through respiratory droplets (coughing, sneezing), direct contact with an infected person or contaminated surfaces, and through vectors like insects. The human immune system is the primary defense against viral infections. However, some viruses can evade or overwhelm the immune response.

Treatment for viral infections typically focuses on managing symptoms and supporting the body's recovery, as most viral infections do not have specific cures. Antiviral medications exist for certain viruses, such as influenza and HIV, which can help inhibit viral replication. Prevention methods, such as vaccination, hygiene practices (handwashing), and avoiding contact with sick individuals, are crucial in controlling the spread of viral infections.
