Viestintärooleja are communication roles that describe the different functions individuals or groups can perform within a communication process. These roles help to understand how messages are created, transmitted, received, and interpreted. Recognizing these roles can improve the effectiveness and efficiency of communication within any context, from interpersonal interactions to organizational settings.

Common communication roles include the sender, who initiates the message; the receiver, who interprets and responds to the message; and the channel, which is the medium through which the message travels. Within a group or organization, more specific roles emerge. For instance, a facilitator guides the communication process, ensuring that discussions remain on track and that all voices are heard. A gatekeeper controls the flow of information, deciding what messages are shared and with whom. A devil's advocate challenges prevailing ideas to stimulate critical thinking and avoid groupthink. A summarizer synthesizes information and key points, making it easier for others to grasp the essence of the discussion.

Other roles might include the idea generator, who contributes new concepts; the critic, who evaluates ideas; the harmonizer, who resolves conflicts; and the reporter, who documents outcomes and decisions. The effectiveness of a communication process often depends on the balance and skillful execution of these various roles. Understanding one's own communication role and recognizing the roles of others can foster better collaboration, reduce misunderstandings, and lead to more productive outcomes. In many situations, individuals may occupy multiple roles or their roles may shift depending on the specific communication event.
