Viemärilukot

Viemärilukot, commonly known as traps or P-traps, are essential components of plumbing systems designed to prevent sewer gases from entering a building. They are typically U-shaped sections of pipe located beneath sinks, showers, and other plumbing fixtures. The curved shape of the viemärilukko retains a small amount of water, creating a seal that blocks the upward passage of unpleasant and potentially harmful gases from the sewage system.

This water seal is crucial for maintaining sanitary conditions and air quality within a home or building. When a fixture is used, water flows through the trap, flushing away waste and replenishing the water seal. If a fixture is not used for an extended period, the water in the trap can evaporate, breaking the seal. This can lead to sewer gases escaping into the room. In such cases, running water through the fixture will re-establish the seal.

Viemärilukot are usually made of plastic (PVC or ABS) or metal (like brass or stainless steel). They are designed to be easily accessible for cleaning, as they can become clogged with debris over time. Regular maintenance and occasional flushing can help prevent blockages and ensure the trap functions effectively. Different types of viemärilukot exist, adapted for various installation scenarios and fixture types, but their fundamental purpose remains the same: to maintain a water barrier against sewer gases.
