The procedure involves a patient undergoing an X-ray examination while a contrast agent, such as barium, is administered. As the patient swallows or performs a particular action, the movement of the contrast agent is recorded as a video. This allows healthcare professionals to observe the function and mechanics of various bodily systems.

Common applications of videofluoroscopy include the evaluation of swallowing disorders (dysphagia), which can reveal issues with the oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal phases of deglutition.
