Vetikate

Vetikate is a fictional taxon used in speculative biology and worldbuilding to describe a hypothetical lineage of multicellular, eukaryotic organisms. The term does not appear in standard scientific taxonomy and has no formal definition accepted by the scientific community.

In common fictional treatments, vetikates are depicted as modular organisms that form networks of filaments or sheetlike tissue, capable of both growth and simple differentiation. They are described as occupying moist environments—forests, wetlands, and shallow aquatic zones—and sometimes forming mats on soil or decaying matter.

Metabolism and life cycles vary by author. Some depictions assign photoautotrophic capabilities; others describe heterotrophy or mixotrophy, with propagules such as spores or buds enabling dispersal. Reproduction may be asexual or, occasionally, involve rudimentary sexual processes. Interactions with other organisms—fungal partners, microbes, or grazers—are common in worldbuilding portrayals, highlighting symbiotic and ecological relationships.

In classifying Vetikate within a fictional taxonomy, authors sometimes create higher-level groups such as kingdoms Vetikata or clades Vetikatae, but these are not standardized and differ across works.
