Vesipersuntelemäv

Vesipersuntelemäv is a Finnish term that translates directly to "water hammering" or "water knocking." It refers to a phenomenon that can occur in plumbing systems, particularly those with a significant amount of water pressure or rapid changes in flow. This noise is typically caused by the sudden stoppage of moving water, often when a valve is closed quickly or when air is trapped within the pipes. The abrupt cessation of water flow creates a shockwave that travels back through the system, causing the pipes to vibrate and produce a hammering sound.

The occurrence of vesipersuntelemäv can be exacerbated by factors such as old or worn plumbing fixtures, rigid pipe materials, and insufficient support for the pipes. While the sound itself is usually harmless, prolonged or severe water hammering can potentially lead to stress on pipe joints and connections, potentially causing leaks over time.
