Version-tolerant refers to software designs, interfaces, and data formats that remain usable across changes in software versions. A version-tolerant system can accommodate newer or older clients and data without breaking, by interpreting inputs or delegating to compatible components when possible.

Principles include backward compatibility, forward compatibility, and graceful degradation. The aim is to separate stable contracts from evolving internals, often using version negotiation, explicit deprecation cycles, and additive changes rather than breaking ones. Semantic versioning (semver) is commonly employed to communicate compatibility expectations.

Techniques to achieve version tolerance include tolerant parsing and unknown field handling, schema evolution with optional fields and defaults, and adapters or shims that translate between versions. Protocols and APIs may negotiate a version or accept multiple representations, while data formats may retain unknown fields to preserve round-tripping.

Common use cases include public APIs that serve a broad client base, distributed services that evolve independently, and data stores or file formats that must remain readable by older software. Examples are JSON APIs that ignore unknown properties while preserving them, Protobuf messages that preserve unknown fields, RESTful services with versioned endpoints or content negotiation, and XML with namespaces.

Challenges involve managing complexity, ensuring performance, and enforcing clear deprecation policies. Testing across versions can be extensive, and over-tolerance can obscure breaking changes. A balanced approach seeks to maximize compatibility while allowing evolution.
