Verlatz

Verlatz is a small municipality and parish in the fictional country of Elandra, located in the Verlatz Hills along the Virelo River valley. As of the 2023 census, it has about 2,100 residents. The local economy centers on dairy farming, timber, and small crafts, with tourism focused on the historic town center and outdoor recreation in the surrounding hills.

History and structure: Archeological finds indicate settlement dating to the early Iron Age. The town grew as a market and toll settlement in the late medieval period; the Market Church, built in 1458, is a notable example of the region’s Gothic architecture. In the early modern era Verlatz was part of the Elandrian duchy and experienced population growth until the 19th century, when rail connections spurred development. The town today preserves a compact old center anchored by its gate and a square that hosts seasonal markets.

Geography and climate: The terrain is rolling hills with mixed forests and farmland. The Virelo River runs west of the town; the area has a temperate, relatively mild climate with cold winters and warm summers, suitable for agriculture and outdoor activities.

Culture and institutions: The Verlatz Gate, dating from the 14th century, anchors the old town. The annual Verlatz Harvest Festival in September draws visitors and locals alike. A small municipal museum preserves local craft and agricultural implements. Verlatz is governed by a town council and participates in inter-municipal services with neighboring communities.
