Verjaardag

Verjaardag is the Dutch term for the anniversary of a person’s birth. It is used in the Netherlands and in the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium (Flanders), as well as in Dutch-speaking communities abroad. The word can be translated roughly as “birth day” or “day of birth,” referring to the annual return of the day on which someone was born.

Traditionally, verjaardagen involve a celebration at home or with friends, exchanging gifts, and eating cake. The common greeting is Gefeliciteerd met je verjaardag (Happy birthday to you). In the Netherlands and Flanders it is customary to sing Lang zal hij/zij leven after the person is greeted, and to offer well-wishes and cards. Parties may range from small family gatherings to larger social or workplace celebrations, with activities and meals arranged according to personal preference.

Age plays a role in some celebrations, as certain milestone ages may be marked more prominently, especially in childhood. In many families, children host a party at school or at home, while adults may celebrate with a dinner, drinks, or a casual get-together. The form and tone of celebrations vary by region, culture, and personal tradition.

Historically, birthday customs have roots in various cultures. The modern Dutch usage and practices were reinforced through social customs in the 19th and 20th centuries. The practice of lighting candles on a birthday cake is a commonly cited tradition dating to 18th‑century German-speaking areas, and it has since become widespread in Dutch-speaking communities.
