Vereux

Vereux is a small rural commune in the northern part of the country of Norda, within the Valorn region. It covers 12.4 square kilometers and had a population of 2,980 in 2020. The commune is governed by a mayor and a municipal council, and forms part of the intercommunal cooperation structure for local services.

Vereux lies in a gently rolling agricultural plain. The Vereux River runs along the eastern edge, and the surrounding soils are predominantly arable with pockets of pasture. The climate is temperate with regular rainfall, supporting cereal crops and dairy farming.

The first documentary reference to Vereux dates from the 12th century. The village grew around a parish church and a medieval bridge. In the 19th century a railway spur linked the commune to larger markets, promoting gradual growth; in the late 20th century population declined modestly as urban areas expanded.

Economy: Today the local economy is centered on agriculture—cereal crops, dairy production, and horticulture—and small-scale crafts. A number of residents commute to nearby towns for work, and there is a modest services sector serving the local community.

Notable sites include Saint-Pierre Church, dating to the 15th century, the 18th‑century town hall, and a restored water mill along the river. The annual harvest festival and a weekly market are the town's main cultural events.

The village has a primary school, while secondary education is provided in nearby towns.
