Veretüübile, more commonly known as blood typing, is a classification system for blood based on the presence or absence of inherited antigens on the surface of red blood cells. The most widely used system is the ABO system, which categorizes blood into four main types: A, B, AB, and O. Type A blood has A antigens, type B has B antigens, type AB has both A and B antigens, and type O has neither. Another critical factor in blood typing is the Rh factor, which indicates the presence or absence of the RhD antigen. Blood types are often expressed as a combination of ABO and Rh, such as A+, B-, O+, or AB-.

The importance of blood typing lies primarily in blood transfusions. When a person receives a blood transfusion, their immune system will recognize and attack foreign antigens on the transfused red blood cells, leading to a potentially life-threatening transfusion reaction. Therefore, it is crucial to transfuse blood that is compatible with the recipient's blood type. Type O negative blood is considered the universal donor because it lacks A, B, and RhD antigens and can generally be transfused to individuals of any blood type in emergencies. Type AB positive blood is the universal recipient as it has both A and B antigens and the RhD antigen, meaning it can receive blood from any ABO and Rh type.

Beyond transfusions, blood typing is also essential in prenatal care to identify potential Rh incompatibility between an Rh-negative mother and an Rh-positive fetus. This can lead to hemolytic disease of the newborn, a serious condition that can be managed with specific medical interventions. Blood typing also plays a role in forensic science for identification purposes and in anthropological studies to understand population genetics and migration patterns. The process of determining blood type typically involves taking a blood sample and testing it with antibodies against the A, B, and RhD antigens.
