Verenmyrkytystä, known in English as sepsis, is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body's response to an infection damages its own tissues. It is a medical emergency that requires prompt treatment. Sepsis can develop from any type of infection, whether it is in the lungs, urinary tract, skin, or elsewhere in the body. Bacteria are the most common cause, but viruses, fungi, and parasites can also trigger sepsis.

The symptoms of sepsis can vary and often appear suddenly. They may include fever or a feeling of being very cold, rapid breathing, a fast heart rate, confusion or disorientation, extreme pain or discomfort, and clammy or sweaty skin. In some cases, a person with sepsis may also experience a rash. Early recognition and treatment are crucial for survival and to prevent complications.

Diagnosis of sepsis involves a review of symptoms, a physical examination, and laboratory tests. Blood tests are essential to identify the presence of infection and to determine the specific microorganism causing it. Imaging tests like X-rays or CT scans may also be used to locate the source of infection. Treatment typically involves administering antibiotics to combat the infection, providing fluids to maintain blood pressure, and supporting vital organ function. In severe cases, patients may require admission to an intensive care unit for close monitoring and specialized care. The prognosis for sepsis depends on factors such as the severity of the infection, the patient's overall health, and how quickly treatment is initiated.
