Veredelingswas

Veredelingswas, commonly referred to as grafting wax, is a wax-based sealant used in horticulture to protect grafts and buds during the healing process. It forms a protective barrier around the graft union, reducing moisture loss and guarding against desiccation, pests, and pathogens. By creating a stable microclimate at the graft site, veredelingswas supports successful cambial contact and callus formation.

Composition and variants often involve paraffin or microcrystalline waxes, sometimes combined with beeswax, rosin or other resins, and occasionally added oils to improve pliability. Modern products may also be synthetic or polymer-based sealants. The exact formulation is chosen to balance flexibility, sealing strength, and ease of removal when needed.

Application methods vary. The graft site is typically heated to a pliable but solid state and then coated with a thin layer of wax, either by dipping the graft in melted wax or by brushing on a carefully even layer. The goal is to seal the entire graft area without creating excessive thickness that could trap moisture. After cooling, the wax should be smooth and intact but not overly bulky.

Use is common in fruit-tree nurseries, vineyards, and home orchards, especially for budding and grafting of scions onto rootstocks. Alternatives to wax sealing include grafting tapes or wraps. Proper use requires avoiding overheating, ensuring full coverage of the graft, and monitoring for any signs of decay or desiccation as the plant heals.
