Verdades

Verdades is the plural form of verdad in Spanish, used to denote truths or true propositions. In everyday language, verdades refer to statements or beliefs that correspond to reality, as well as to generally accepted facts or principles.

In philosophy, debates about la verdad encompass several theories of truth. The correspondence theory holds that truth depends on how accurately a statement reflects the way the world is. The coherence theory suggests that truth is determined by the consistency of a statement with a broader, credible system of beliefs. Pragmatic theories define truth by the usefulness or practical success of a belief. Deflationary or minimalist approaches treat truth as a linguistic device that does not in itself entail a substantive property beyond the endorsement of a proposition.

Linguistically, verdades can be qualified by certainty, context, and domain. Distinctions are often made between scientific truths, historical truths, ethical or normative truths, and personal truths, recognizing that criteria for truth may vary across disciplines and perspectives. Phrases such as “verdades a medias” (half-truths) and “verdad absoluta” (absolute truth) reflect common concerns about completeness, bias, and certainty in the assessment of what is true.

Culturally, verdades appear in literature, journalism, and discourse to address authenticity, knowledge, and accountability. They are frequently contrasted with mentiras (lies) and ilusiones (illusions), highlighting ongoing tensions between perception, evidence, and justification. In contemporary usage, the discussion of verdades often intersects with epistemology, science communication, and social debate, where competing claims require evaluation against available evidence and reasoning.
