Ventimiglia

Ventimiglia is a town and comune in the Liguria region of northwestern Italy, in the province of Imperia. It lies on the Ligurian Sea near the French border and forms part of the Riviera di Ponente. The town is situated at the mouth of the Nervia river and features a historic center perched above the coast, with views of the sea and surrounding hills. The area has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters.

Historically, Ventimiglia has roots in antiquity and developed as a coastal settlement during the Middle Ages under the influence of the Republic of Genoa. In later centuries it passed under the rule of the Kingdom of Sardinia and eventually became part of the modern Italian state. The local economy relies on tourism, commerce, and services, with agriculture in the hinterland providing fruit and olive cultivation. A weekly market held on Fridays is a notable attraction, drawing visitors from the region and across the border.

The town preserves a historic urban fabric with narrow lanes, churches, and waterfront promenades. Its beaches and maritime promenade connect to neighboring towns along the Ligurian coast. The surrounding countryside offers hiking opportunities in the foothills of the Ligurian Alps.

Ventimiglia is served by the Autostrada dei Fiori (A10) and by the Genoa–Ventimiglia railway, which links the town with Genoa and continues toward the French border. A border crossing near Menton facilitates cross-border travel and commerce.
