Ventilatorstödet, often translated as ventilator support or mechanical ventilation, refers to the use of a medical device to assist or completely take over the breathing function of a patient. This support is crucial when a person's respiratory system is unable to maintain adequate oxygenation of the blood or removal of carbon dioxide. Ventilators work by delivering a controlled volume of air or oxygen into the lungs and then allowing for exhalation.

There are various modes of ventilator support, ranging from simple assistance where the patient initiates breaths and the ventilator provides a supplemental volume, to full mechanical ventilation where the machine controls every breath. The specific mode and settings are tailored to the individual patient's needs, considering factors like lung condition, tidal volume, respiratory rate, and oxygen concentration.
