Ventiilit is a fictional mineral described in speculative geology and science-fiction contexts. It is not an officially recognized mineral in real-world mineralogy, but it is used in world-building to illustrate how a rare hydrous silicate might behave under specific geological conditions. The name combines ventus, the Latin word for wind, with the common mineral suffix -ilit, reflecting its imagined origin in wind-exposed hydrothermal environments.

Physically, ventiilit is described as forming slender, prismatic to fibrous crystals that occur in aggregates. The color ranges from pale blue to colorless, with transparency from translucent to transparent and a vitreous to silky luster. In many depictions, ventiilit has a Mohs hardness around 5 to 6 and a low to moderate density, roughly 2.9 to 3.1 g/cm3. The crystal system is often suggested as orthorhombic in world-building notes, though writers may modify this for narrative or aesthetic reasons. Its optical properties, when described, include notable pleochroism and occasional fluorescence under UV light.

Formation and occurrence are typically tied to hydrothermal activity in wind-exposed coastal or volcanic regions. In these scenarios, hot, silica-rich fluids interact with pre-existing rocks, depositing ventiilit in voids and veins alongside zeolites, calcite, and natrolite. Common fictional localities include volcanic archipelagos and arid coastal domes, where wind-driven processes are imagined to influence mineral growth.

Uses within fiction often emphasize ventiilit as a decorative gemstone or a collector’s specimen due to its rarity and striking appearance. Some narratives explore its potential in optical or nanostructured applications, though in the imagined setting it remains primarily valued for aesthetics.
