Origins trace to a cluster of port settlements established during the Great Trade Era (circa the 9th–11th centuries). The city grew around a natural harbor and river access, becoming a free city-state under a merchant-led council. It endured sieges during regional conflicts and built maritime defenses.

Located on a sheltered bay along the Veneneen Strait, the city features limestone quays, a hill district, and a cooler coastal climate with wet winters.
