Vendepunk

Vendepunk is a speculative subculture and visual/audio aesthetic that blends punk's DIY, anti-establishment sensibilities with the ubiquity of vending machines, kiosks, and microtransactions. The term describes works and practices that critique consumer culture and data monetization by reimagining everyday retail interfaces as sites of subversion, play, or critique.

Aesthetics and practice often fuse retro-futurist or lo-fi design with arcade-like or barcode motifs. Common elements include neon signage, QR codes, coin-ops, and glitchy, sensor-driven audio cues. Projects frequently combine art, game-like interaction, and hardware, installing vending units that dispense tokens, art objects, or access to experiences. Themes center on surveillance capitalism, labor precarity, automation, and the paradoxes of abundance in a data-driven economy.

Origins can be traced to online art and zine scenes in the early 2020s and draw from cyberpunk, steampunk, vaporwave, and DIY electronics. Vendepunk appears across zines, indie games, fashion, and gallery works, often emphasizing participatory engagement over passive consumption.

Relation to other movements: while sharing critique of corporate power with cyberpunk, vendepunk concentrates on vending networks and micro-economies rather than corporate towers. Critics say it risks being purely aesthetic; proponents argue it provides a concrete lens on how commerce shapes everyday life.
