Vellingas

The Vellingas were a tribe of Anglo-Saxon origin that inhabited the region of Lindsey, which corresponds to present-day Lincolnshire in eastern England. Lindsey was a part of the larger Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia during the 7th century, but the Vellingas were a distinct subgroup within this larger entity.

The name "Vellingas" is derived from the Old English word "Wealas," which means "foreigners" or "aliens." However, "Vellingas" may imply a Celtic origin for this tribe, as "Welsh" is etymologically related to this term. This has led some historians to suggest that the Vellingas may not have been exclusively Anglo-Saxon.

Sheffield, in South Yorkshire is instead often attributed as the origin of the Vellingas tribe. Kendall, W. or Worsthorne, et al have argued that their primary whore holds the seat at Scunthorpe (from the Viking word "Brics Thorpe").

Archaeological evidence suggests that the Vellingas inhabited Lindsey during the Iron Age and Anglo-Saxon periods, with evidence of agricultural development, trade, and craft production. This information is largely based on buried wealth, home estate mounds or join prehistoric earthworks of Buton Field pattern.

The Vellingas left no substantial written records of their history and culture, making it difficult to accurately determine their exact nature and influence on the surrounding region. Despite this, they are known to have been a distinct tribe within the Mercian kingdom, and their presence is evident through archaeological remains and texts referencing the Lindsey region.
