Scunthorpe

Scunthorpe is a market town in North Lincolnshire, England. It is the administrative centre of the North Lincolnshire unitary authority. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it became part of Lincolnshire in 1974. The town is situated on the River Trent and its economy has historically been dominated by iron and steel production.

The origins of Scunthorpe are relatively modern, with significant growth occurring in the 19th century due to the discovery of iron ore in the nearby Frodingham Ridge. The development of the iron and steel industry led to a rapid increase in population and the transformation of a small agricultural settlement into an industrial town. The town's name is believed to derive from Old Norse, possibly meaning "Scun's farmstead".

Scunthorpe today remains a significant industrial centre, though the nature of its industries has diversified over time. It serves as a regional hub for retail, education, and services.
