Vektoriruumide, also known as vector spaces, are fundamental concepts in linear algebra and functional analysis. A vector space is a set equipped with two operations: vector addition and scalar multiplication. These operations must satisfy a set of axioms, known as the vector space axioms, which ensure that the operations behave in a consistent and predictable manner.

The elements of a vector space are called vectors, and the scalars are typically real or complex numbers. The zero vector is a special vector that acts as the additive identity. Every vector has an additive inverse, and scalar multiplication is distributive over vector addition. Additionally, scalar multiplication is associative, and the scalar 1 acts as the multiplicative identity.

Vector spaces can be finite-dimensional or infinite-dimensional. In finite-dimensional vector spaces, every vector can be expressed as a linear combination of a finite number of basis vectors. In infinite-dimensional vector spaces, this is not always possible, and the concept of a basis becomes more complex.

Vector spaces are used extensively in mathematics, physics, engineering, and computer science. They provide a framework for studying linear transformations, linear equations, and linear maps. The study of vector spaces is a cornerstone of linear algebra and has numerous applications in various fields.
