Veiligings

Veiligings is a Dutch term that is sometimes used to refer to devices that protect electrical installations by interrupting current during faults. In standard Dutch, the plural form is veiligingen, and the spelling "Veiligings" is not a typical grammatical form; it may appear as a brand name, a stylistic choice, or in non-standard usage.

In practice, veiligings include fuses and circuit breakers. A fuse (zekering) contains a metal conductor that melts when the current exceeds its rated value, opening the circuit. Fuses are typically single-use and must be replaced after they activate. Circuit breakers (automaten or stroomonderbrekers) are reusable devices that trip automatically when an overload or short circuit is detected. They can be reset after tripping and are widely used in modern electrical installations.

Where they are placed, veiligings are usually located in a distribution panel or fuse box near the point where power enters a building. They protect the wiring and connected devices by limiting current to safe levels, reducing the risk of overheating and fire. In Dutch installations, the transition from older fuse-based systems to modern circuit breakers has been accompanied by the use of residual-current devices (aardlekschakelaars) for additional leakage protection and by adherence to national and international standards.
