Vedenhylkivä

Vedenhylkivä is a Finnish term used to describe a property of surfaces and materials that resist wetting. It combines veden meaning “of water” and hylkivä meaning “repellent.” In Finnish-language contexts, vedenhylkivä functions mainly as an adjective indicating that water beads up and rolls off rather than spreading across the surface.

The term is commonly applied to textiles, coatings, paints and finishes, and outdoor materials where reduced water absorption is desirable. It is important to distinguish vedenhylkivä from waterproofing: a vedenhylkivä surface may still allow water to penetrate under sufficient pressure or prolonged exposure, whereas waterproofing aims to prevent ingress under specified conditions.

How vedenhylkivä is achieved varies. Methods include chemical treatments with silanes, silicones or fluorinated polymers, as well as wax or oil-based coatings and micro- or nano-scale surface structuring. Durability depends on abrasion, dirt buildup, UV exposure and washing or cleaning practices; the performance can diminish over time and may require reapplication or reproofing.

Measurement and labeling are context-dependent. Hydrophobicity is often assessed by water contact angle measurements or simple drop tests, while practical performance may be evaluated through spray tests or immersion tests. In Finnish usage, vedenhylkivä is a descriptive term rather than a formal standard, and product labels may use various formulations to convey similar properties.
