Vattenmättnaden, often translated as "water saturation," is a fundamental concept in hydrology and soil science. It refers to the proportion of a soil's pore space that is filled with water. This value is typically expressed as a fraction or a percentage, ranging from 0% (completely dry) to 100% (completely saturated).

Understanding water saturation is crucial for various applications. In agriculture, it helps determine irrigation needs and predict crop water availability. For environmental engineers, it's vital for assessing groundwater recharge, pollutant transport, and the stability of slopes. Geologists use it to study aquifer properties and the movement of subsurface fluids.

The water saturation of a soil is influenced by several factors, including the amount of rainfall or irrigation, the soil's texture (the size distribution of its particles), its structure (how particles are arranged), and the depth to the water table.
